Gallo-Roman ornamental disc "Menimane"

The Mainz tombstone of the wealthy boatman Blussus and his wife Menimane is one of the most interesting civilian testimonies to the early Roman provincial population. The monument is also particularly significant in terms of the clothing and jewellery of the time. These are still fully committed to the old Celtic tradition, even if the gravestone with its Latin inscription can of course be dated to the Roman imperial period.

Grabstein Zierscheibe Menimane

The large decorative disc, which is worn on a chain around the neck, is striking. It can be assumed that this neck ornament developed from the traditional Celtic necklaces, between the ends of which a new decorative element was integrated. These large ornamental discs are also known from other monuments, such as another Weisenau gravestone or as a choker ("torques") on a grave monument in Ingelheim.

The exact chronological classification is somewhat difficult, as Roman gravestones of "Celtic character" repeatedly appear up to the Neronian period. However, the Menimane monument certainly dates back to the first half of the 1st century AD.
