Design and inspiration:
The pendant is based on Roman motifs and takes the form of a miniaturised phalera. Phalerae were elaborately designed, round decorative discs that were often awarded as military decorations, also known as dona militaria. In addition to their decorative function, they served as a sign of honour and recognition.
Motif: Antinous
The portrait of Antinous that adorns this pendant is a special tribute to one of the most famous personalities in Roman history. Antinous came from Bithynia, a region in Asia Minor that is part of modern-day Turkey. He was born in the city of Bithynion-Claudiopolis (now Bolu), which at the time was part of the Roman province of Bithynia. In ancient times, this region was strongly influenced by Greek culture. Antinous had a close personal relationship with Emperor Hadrian and after his early and tragic death he was almost mythically revered.
The legend surrounding the death of Antinous says that he sacrificed himself out of love and deep devotion to Emperor Hadrian. This story is based on the mysterious nature of his death. Antinous drowned in the Nile in 130 AD, and the exact circumstances of his death are still unclear today.
A widespread interpretation is that Antinous sacrificed himself voluntarily in order to protect Hadrian. At the time, it was believed in the Roman and Greek world that a voluntary human sacrifice could prolong the life of a loved or important person. Antinous' sacrifice was therefore interpreted as an act of great devotion, possibly to favour Hadrian's health or fate.
This legend contributed to the elevation and deification of Antinous, as it portrayed him as a selfless and loyal companion. This strengthened the cult around his person and consolidated his role as a symbol of beauty and loyalty in Roman culture. After his death, Hadrian founded the city of Antinopolis in his honour and promoted the cult in which Antinous was worshipped as a god.
Meaning and symbolism:
In Roman culture, Antinous symbolised beauty, youth and the idea of a deep, almost mythical connection between people. His cult developed throughout the Roman Empire and symbolised the power of personal relationships and immortality through art and memory. The Antinous portrait pendant is not just a piece of jewellery, but also a symbol of selfless love and devotion, even for same-sex partners.
This unique piece of jewellery is perfect for anyone who feels a deep connection to antiquity and appreciates the symbolic power and historical significance of Roman times. Wear a piece of history with pride and elegance!
