This hinged fibula has a foot in the shape of an animal head. It is possible that the  space between the wavy lines on the fibula bow was originally decorated with coloured enamel. Similar brooches can be found from Great Britain to North Africa and date to the 2nd century.

This piece is a replica of a find from the Saalburg fort in the Taunus hills, Germany, inv. no. S588. Courtesy of the Saalburg Museum. Length approx. 4.5 cm.
Our reconstruction is handmade from real bronze, the iron needle construction is fully functional.

Literature: A. Böhme-Schönberger, Die Fibeln der Kastelle Saalburg und Zugmantel, In: Saalburg-Jahrbuch XXIX (Berlin 1972).
